A Hunger for Purity?

Check out this fascinating article that reveals some pretty surprising things about the college hook-up culture. Is there a longing on your campus for purity? You might be surprised.

Why are Evolutionists So Angry?

Check out this new documentary that's coming to theaters in Lexington later this month. Ben Stein investigates the hostility that many scientists have toward other scientists who are beginning to question the Darwinian theory of evolution. That Darwinian evolution functions much like a faith-based religion has long been documented (Philip Johnson, Darwin on Trial). What is surprising here is the persecution being levelled toward any scientist who dares to question the "untouchable" theory. The American academy, long characterized by the uninhibited flow of free ideas, doesn't seem to like its darling theory being questioned. Check out the trailer: http://expelledthemovie.com

Six Days Until...

There are only six days until The Gathering. I plead with all my fellow students to actively and intentionally invite friends and even perfect strangers to this event. Please, do not wait! This is a Question and Answer session so, by design, it will not be complete without QUESTIONS.
On the subject of student ministry, specifically the typically low expectations that many involved have, Dr. Aiden w. Tozer says this:
"You can have as little as you are satisfied with or as much as God wants to give you."
This is not a health and wealth message, but assurance that great and good things will happen in pursuit of the gospel. We must expect and work towards this outcome, not being complacent with stagnation and trusting always in a God that is powerful, glorious, and loving.
Look for more reminders which will be posted each day, from now until Wednesday.

Next Wednesday at the Gathering: Ask a Pastor Anything

As some of you know Pastor David Prince of Ashland Avenue Baptist Church will be our guest at the Gathering next Wednesday. The format will be Q & A and I want to encourage everyone to bring the people you've been ministering to this semester. No question is off limits. This is a unique opportunity to ask a wise pastor anything. Pastor David will try his best to answer any question from a Bible-centered, Christ-centered perspective. Begin inviting friends and acquaintances now and begin collecting questions.

Michael Card on Discipleship

As many of you know, our church will be having Michael Card, theologian/songwriter, as a guest on March 9. Well, my seminary classes got cancelled today, so I've been reading his book The Walk, which is about his discipleship relationship with Dr. Bill Lane. Its a short read and I recommend it. We all should be in the process of being discipled and discipling.

Here's a very insightful description of discipleship: "After all, that's one of the tasks of disciplers: to wake us up to what is really going on around us, to encourage us to take our eyes off ourselves and see that our world is not the only world. That outside the narrow confines of the self there exists a world that truly is golden. And they allow us to borrow their eyes until we can see it for ourselves" (29).

We will be looking at the topic of "Friendship" from the book of Proverbs on Sunday. This topic of discipleship is connected. I'm interested in your thoughts on "discipleship" and "friendship" and what role they are to play in our lives as Christians.

Intentional on Campus

We have been challenged lately from Pastor David at AABC to be intentional with every aspect of our lives, commiting everything to the lordship of Christ. I just wanted to post a reminder that this applies especially to what you all are doing on campus everyday.

It can be so easy just to exist and survive. Wake up, go to class, go to work, go to sleep...and the cycle continues. I want to challenge us to open our eyes this week and look for the opportunities that God is placing before us. Let's be intentional about sharing Christ with the people around us.

This may look different for different people, but it may mean sitting in the social area of your dorm in order to start conversations that are intentionally about Christ. It may mean scheduling lunch with someone who you've spoken to in the past about Christ. Whatever it may look like for you, be intentional.

A New Address

If you're reading this post then you have realized that we have a new URL which is easier to remember and will hopefully encourage frequent visits. As a sort of christening I encourage everyone to post a comment, either suggesting an improvement to the site (such as different colors, banners, or links) or just saying hello.

The Use of Words

I can't wait for Sunday. First, I can't wait to make fun of all of you for falling down so often skiing. No, really I can't wait to worship our great God with the body of Christ. It is the highlight of my week and gives me a small glimpse of heaven each Sunday.

This Sunday in our BFG we will continue our discussion of Proverbs by examing the topic of "The Use of Words." I will post some passages for reflection as well as some discussion questions below. If you have time this week look into some of these and post your thoughts below.

  • Read James 3 this week. This is the most powerful exposition on the tongue that I have ever read.
  • How serious is it, according to James 1:26-27, to have a bad tongue?

  • Why do you think its so hard to tame the tongue?

  • Why do you think its so enjoyable to talk about people behind their back?

  • Questions for personal reflection: Do you talk too much? Do you say behind peoples' backs what you would never say to their face? Are people usually elevated or diminished when they walk away from having a conversation with you?

  • Can anyone list some practical suggestions for taming the tongue?

SKIING TIME IS ALMOST HERE!!!

Don't forget to meet at the church office at 2:30 pm on Friday. If you are not riding with the group please let me know so that we don't wait for you. Don't forget to bring warm clothes and money for lunch on Saturday. Topics for Friday night 'talks': 1) Who is Jesus? 2) What Does Jesus Want from Me?
The picture to the right was taken last year of me :)
